Resident Coach
USA Weightlifting (USAW), the National Governing Body for the sport of Olympic style weightlifting, has a unique opening for the position of Resident Coach at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO.
Position Description
Position Summary
The Resident Coach will be directly responsible for the Weightlifting program at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center. This position offers the exceptional opportunity to identify, select, and develop athletes in the sport of Weightlifting to the elite international level of competition, while adhering to the mission, goals and objectives of USA Weightlifting and the United States Olympic Committee. Directing the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center program allows for this coach to direct athletes through all facets of preparation as well as discovering new methods of athlete development, training, and recruitment.
Primary Responsibilities
The Resident Coach will serve as the primary coach for the Full Program participants living at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, as well as those identified and qualified athletes living off campus. They will develop and monitor individualized and periodized training plans for the resident athletes, provide short term and long term goal planning/training for athlete development, create a thoroughly planned 12-16 week training and recovery cycle for varied levels of Olympic style weightlifting athletes, and respond to individual athlete development.
- Utilize the tools and resources provided by the US Olympic Committee (USOC), to include Sports Science, Sports Medicine, Sports Psychology, and Nutrition to optimize athlete production.
- Assist the High Performance Director in identifying talented weightlifters for possible inclusion into the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center and developmental camps throughout the year.
- Complete annual Continuing Education to stay abreast of the latest Sports Science and Coaching methodology through seminars and other avenues. Present to USAW members and coaches new techniques and methodology to further continued improvement of USAW coaching and education.
- Assist the High Performance Director with Coaching Education programs for distribution to coaches nationwide.
- Understand and adhere to the anti-doping policies practiced and accepted by USA Weightlifting, the United States Olympic Committee, the United States Anti-Doping Agency, the World Anti-Doping Agency, and the International Olympic Committee.
- Support the CEO and HPD in the preparation of the High Performance Plan as it directly relates to the Resident Program and International Competition schedules, budgets, and reports. Will assist High Performance Director in coaching development within USAW and contribute to the national coaching education programs.
- Make personal appearances and presentations as requested in support of USA Weightlifting marketing, communications and development programs.
- Duties may include hosting national coaching clinics, training camps, and other events to further promote the sport of USA Weightlifting and coaching.
- Travel expectations include National and International competition, clinics and other educational opportunities.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the CEO.
Position Relationships
- Athletes and Coaches
1) Athletes in Full Program participation at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center, Local Colorado Springs Athletes that meet additional criteria for facility use only, participants in USA Weightlifting camps and clinics.
2) Serve as a resource to USA Weightlifting Member Coaches in the development of athletes and philosophies throughout the nation at the club level.
- USA Weightlifting Staff
1) Chief Executive Officer - Report to CEO as requested.
2) High Performance Director - Work intimately with to develop, implement, and monitor training and strategic plans, discuss training methodologies and philosophies of resident athletes, coaching education, and the High Performance Plan.
3) USA Weightlifting Staff Members - Provide input as needed.
- Other
1) U.S. Olympic Committee - At the request of the CEO and High Performance Director.
2) USAW Board of Directors - Provide input as requested.
3) Coaching and Education Committee - To achieve the USA Weightlifting High Performance Plan.
4) USA Weightlifting Clubs and Members - Serve as resource.
5) International Weightlifting Federation - At the request of the CEO.
Qualifications and Selection Criteria
The optimal candidate will provide a combination of education and experience, fulfilling the following minimum requirements:
- Experience - Substantiation of experience and credentials in the sport of Olympic Weightlifting will include but not be limited to the following:
1) Athlete production to the elite international level
2) International coaching experience
3) Program Development and Individualization
- Education - A Bachelors degree is preferred in a scientific field of study of human anatomy, physiology, sports science or other relative field of science or exercise science studies.
- Communication - Must be fluent in English language, both written and conversational and possess the ability to effectively communicate with athletes, staff and others.
- Doping Free Training - Must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to doping free training, doping free recovery techniques, per US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and World Ant-Doping Agency (WADA) standards.
