DEADLINE for application is December 14, 2010

The Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center is the primary "High Performance Center" of USA Weightlifting and is designed to service our very best athletes with potential for international success.  International success is defined by ability to be a podium athlete in World Championships and Olympic Games.  The conditions for acceptance and continuation in this program will be strict. Participation in this program is not a right or entitlement, but a privilege.  Therefore, a huge demand will be placed on results and progress of the athletes and the coaching staff as well as the athlete's ability to be part of a team environment and adhere to a code of conduct and expectations. This program is for those who are serious about weightlifting.

Two categories for athlete full program participation are available:

  1. 2012 Category:  1 male and 1 female candidate that show potential to compete for elite placing in the 2012 Olympic Games or that show a high potential to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Team at an age and training status which show great potential to compete again in 2016.   These athletes may live either on campus at the CSOTC, or off campus.
  2. 2016 Category:  2 male and 2 female candidates that show potential to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Team and exhibit podium potential for such.  2016 candidates must exhibit potential through current performance, as well as age and physical background which would be conducive to consistent improvement over the long period between now and the 2016 Olympic Games.  Initially, 2016 Candidates must be on campus CSOTC Residents.

 Criteria for participation:

  1. 2012 Category

Criteria 1:  Projected World Championship Placing.  To be considered a 2012 Candidate, senior level athletes must show that they can finish within the top 25 of the World Championships per the 10/16/2009 World Championship placement criteria as detailed in the 2010 Qualifying Totals document, under the section called 2010 Qualifying Totals for International Teams by Ability to Place and Score. Junior athletes must show that they can place in the top 5 at Junior Worlds per the 10/16/2009 Junior World Championship placement criteria as detailed in the 2010 Qualifying Totals document, under the section called 2010 Qualifying Totals for International Teams by Ability to Place and Score: Click here to view.             

Senior or Junior athletes that have previously exhibited a high level of international performance and have posted a total which meets these criteria in the 18 months prior to date of application may be considered for the 2012 Program. 

Criteria 2:  Positive Medal Trajectory Assessment.  A Medal Trajectory as approved in the USAW HPP will be considered as part of the application process.

Criteria 3:  Current Domestic Rank.  Athletes ranked in the top 3 overall men and women in their weight class based on results from all USA Weightlifting domestic and international competitions for the 12 month period prior to date of application.

2016 Category

Senior or Junior athletes that have previously exhibited a high level of international performance and have posted a total which meets these criteria in the 6 months prior to date of application may be considered for the 2016 Program.

School Age athletes must show that they can place in the top 20 at Junior Worlds per the 10/16/2009 Junior World Championship placement criteria  as detailed in the 2010 Qualifying Totals document, under the section called 2010 Qualifying Totals for International Teams by Ability to Place and Score. Criteria 2:  Positive Medal Trajectory Assessment.  A Medal Trajectory as approved in the USAW HPP will be considered as part of the application process.

Criteria 3:  Current Domestic Rank. Athletes ranked in the top 3 overall men and women or top 3 junior men or women in their weight class based on results from all USA Weightlifting domestic and international competitions on our current weight class rankings for the 6 month period prior to application.

Regardless of application date, candidates for the Resident Program must be at least 16 years of age.  Candidates for the 2016 Category may not be more than 28 years of age upon admission to the program. 

  1. Additional Criteria for Full Program Participation:
  • Athletes will be required to work part-time or go to school part-time. All work and/or school schedules must first be approved by the Resident Coach and High Performance Director.
  • Athletes must enroll in the USADA Registered Testing pool prior to arrival to the program.
  • Athletes must agree to a strict code of discipline.
  • Athlete must agree to follow the Resident Coach's training program exactly as planned.
  • Athletes MUST agree to work with all services - nutrition, recovery, psychology, biomechanics, and any other service recommended by the Resident Coach and HPD.
  • Athlete must exhibit improvement of total in competition from year to year.  Consideration to injury may be given in case of lack of improvement. 

Local National Level Facility Use Athletes:

In addition to the 6 athletes in the full program participation as outlined above, and at the discretion of USA Weightlifting, the Resident Coach, and the USOC, 5 athletes living in Colorado Springs that meet the following criteria may also be granted facility use during the times the full program participants train.  These 5 athletes will not be eligible for any additional USOC/CSOTC services.

Criteria for National Level Facility Use only athletes: 

  • Domestic Rank: Athletes ranked in the top 8 overall men and women or top 6 junior men or women in their weight class based on results from all sanctioned USA Weightlifting competitions on our current domestic rankings.
  • Past Elite Status: In consultation with the USOC, USA Weightlifting and the Resident Coach may also be able to select athletes for participation in this category that are not currently ranked in the top 8 of their weight class due to injury which has precluded competition in the previous year. Basis for this decision will be dependant on current physical status, and performance prior to the injury.
